You want a harsh radiation storm – THIS is a harsh radiation storm.
I managed to get radiation storms to do CONSTANT damage instead of only when lightning strikes. I don’t think you should be able to breathe in all that green radioactive smog and still be okay. The storm also never ends…so it’s more like the earth itself is just irradiated to shit. For a Metro-ish experience. Don’t panic though, I spent over 6 hours tweaking everything to where it is still survivable, as long as you have the right gear.
Here are the details:
Outside without a gas mask, hazmat suit, or power armor: 75 rads a second. You’re gonna die in 5 seconds when outdoors without any gear.
Outside with a gas mask: 3 rads per second. I timed this on a stop watch on how long you can go before dying without using radx or radaway. You have around 5 minutes depending on things probably like your level, before dying of radiation. I’m level 18 and it took 5 minutes to die. As long as you have a small stockpile of radaway with you, you should be able to venture outside. Each gas mask filter you pick up in Metro adds 5 minutes of breathing time with the gas mask, so that’s what I went for here. Would love to have breakable gas masks or interchangable filters, but this is the best we have for now that I know of.
Outside with broken hazmat suit: 1 rad a second. You’ll still take some radiation damage with that crack in the mask, but it’ll take 3 times as long.
Outside with hazmat suit: less than 1 rad a second. I don’t think you can get rid of radiation completely. I tried adding a “radiation immunity” effect on to this, but it didn’t seem to make a difference. Still though, You should survive for a LONG time outside with this.
All power armor has the same radiation resistance as the hazmat suit. I didn’t touch any other stats of power armor or other items.
It is a bit tactical if you think about it. You can choose between slightly more radiation, but able to equip armor pieces. You can choose to have more radiation resistance but less damage protection. Or you can rock power armor and be near invincible as long as you have enough cores to power it. Recommend Configurable Power Armor Drain mod if it seems a bit too easy.
Remember, damage is constant.
Adjusted resistances to match rad damage:
1. All gas masks- like 20k resistance I think in order to get it to 3 rads a second.
2. Damaged hazmat suit- 300k resistance I believe.
3. Hazmat suit and all power armor- literally 9 million resistance to get it under 1 rad per second.
You have to keep scaling the resistance up SIGNIFICANTLY in order to match the 75 rad per second damage increase.
Bugs
____
1. When fast traveling to some locations in the game world, the radstorm will not be there. I’ve gone over the settings again and again and again, and I don’t know how to fix this. I looked at other esps from other modders and their files had the same problem. I have edited everything I could find related to weather. Climate, Worldspace, Climate for each individual city, set radiation storm chance to 100 for each, and still fast traveling breaks it sometimes.
However, if you fast travel somewhere where the storm is already brewing, it will stay active wherever you end up walking to while outside. Sanctuary, Goodneighbor, and Diamond City appear to always work when you fast travel to them.
2. I don’t know how to make being outside itself do damage to you, so when you step outside, you won’t start taking radiation damage until the first lightning strike…but after this the damage will stay constant until you go indoors.
