Pain Train – No Power Armor

[UPDATE]: Added an optional file that does NOT include the stagger changes. USE IT OR THE MAIN FILE, NOT BOTH!!!

Description:

Pain Train is so much fun:

I had so much fun barreling into enemies with the Pain Train perk (which lets you known them over if you sprint into them while wearing Power Armor), but I got sick of having to wear a suit of armor that looks like a cross between the Hulk meets the world’s fattest sumo wrestler, so I collected a suite of mods that could emulate all the effects of the power armor without needing to use the damn things (I will list those below).

The only this I couldn’t do was smash into people, which this mod fixes. Now you no longer need to be wearing Power Armor to sprint into enemies to knock them out.

I also made some other changes to the perks – they now follow the level requirement progression that the mod Linear Perk Levels uses (i.e. rank one requires level 1, rank 2 requires level 3, etc.).
Additionally, I have removed the cooldown to the stagger effect (previously an enemy couldn’t be staggered again for another 12 seconds – now it’s 2, and that’s only so that you don’t end up smashing them repeatedly as you continue sprinting).

Furthermore, no enemy is immune to this effect. Even a Deathclaw will get knocked back by it (which if I may say so myself, is hilarious).

Is this a bit unbalanced? Yeah, probably, but it’s far too hilarious for me to care…

This was made with FO4Edit.

The mods I used to emulate the Power Armor effects are:
– Jetpack – Ring
– OPVaultSuit
– No Fall Damage
– Stealth and Recon Gear

==================
How To Install:

Put the “PainTrain_NoPA.esp” into your “Fallout 4/Data” directory.

You will need to either use NMM (not recommended) or Mod Organizer 2 (not recommended at the moment, but will be HIGHLY recommended as soon as it’s out of beta) to load the plugin. The alternative (and recommended) method is to add it to the “plugins.txt” file yourself, and here’s how you do that:

– Open up plugins.txt (for Windows, this is found at “C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Fallout4”), and change manually type enter “PainTrain_NoPA.esp” on a new line in the file (without the quotes, of course).

Now the “AppData” folder is hidden by default on Windows, so you will either need to unhide all files (which you can do from “Folder Options”, or open the Start Menu search bar and type in %appdata% and hit enter (this will dump you into the “AppData/Roaming” folder, so just backtrack one and select the “Local” folder).

I HIGHLY recommend you set plugins.txt to “read only”, or else the will ALWAYS (since the last patch) revert your changes. Or you could just launch the game with F4SE to skip the game’s launcher diddling you over a doghouse (which I recommend)…

=====================
How To Uninstall:

Simply delete “PainTrain_NoPA.esp” – if you installed it manually, you will need to remove the line from “plugins.txt” manually as well.

You should “plugins.txt” as “read only”, though, as all plugins will be wiped the moment you open the launcher if you don’t…

Q/A:

Q: I don’t like this, it’s too OP and sucks!
A: Then don’t download it. See ya! :]

Q: Does this affect how the Pain Train perk works while inside Power Armor?
A: Yes. You will still be able to knock over Deathclaws and repeatedly smash into things – the effect is the same as it would be in or out of the Power Armor.

Q: Can you change the sound to something else when they smash into things while not wearing Power Armor? The metallic smashing sound seems a bit out of context when you aren’t wearing Power Armor.
A: I didn’t really look into how hard to would be to do this using only FO4Edit, but I’m not planning on making any revisions to this mod until after the official tools are released…

Q: Do you have plans to make this “better” eventually?
A: Yes. Once the official tools are released, I plan to remake the mod, adding a 4th rank to the perk that allows you to smash outside of Power Armor, and maybe a 5th that unlocks all staggering.

Q: You do realize that all the changes you mentioned wanting to make can probably be done right now with FO4Edit, right?
A: Yep. I felt all my modding creativity squirt violently out of me when Bethesda actively and maliciously tried to smash the modding community with the last patch, though, and in all honesty if I hadn’t made this mod before then, I probably wouldn’t have (I was feeling almost too apathetic to even release this mod).
I have almost zero things left to do in their game as is (over 300+ hours, all locations discovered, all settlements unlocked and built extensively at, all unique weapons found, all perk magazines found, all bobbleheads found, all models collected, all companions maxed, all side quests completed – all that’s left is to stop procrastinating and finish the main storyline…). ;[
