Darkmeat
Darkmeat V0.1
Who doesn’t like dark meat? Well, not everyone perhaps. Alas, some people want a more tactical advantage for their canine companions. For those that do, I present Darkmeat!
I took a couple of hours tinkering with Dogmeat’s textures to produce a black colored variant (there are already a couple here on the Nexus- I
simply didn’t prefer them myself). His eyes are also now a bit more red and I made his tongue a bit darker pink. The specular highlights on his
tongue stand out a bit more now, which was an unintended yet welcome side-effect.
Features (Not really)
Tactical advantage at night (or simply easier to lose track of)
Enemies are now more intimidated (or not)
Dogmeat now has more confidence (placebo effect)
Notes
I have my graphics settings at a humble level, although I have textures set to Ultra and I’m running a custom ReShade setup. I toggled ReShade off during the night/day and during the day there wasn’t a noticeable difference. With my setup at night, however, Dogmeat was darker compared to a Vanilla setup. Your mileage may vary here and I appreciate any feedback along with your graphics settings (and any visual mods that may affect color).
There are several source Dogmeat textures available to edit and I tested each of the diffuse textures until my changes showed in-game. As an
after thought, I realized some users may not see any changes depending on their settings. I’m not sure if different texture options will utilize one of these other source textures. If you run into issues with Dogmeat’s appearance not changing, please let me know your settings so I can try to repair this in future versions.
The Future of Darkmeat
You may have noticed that Darkmeat was lucky enough to land the “666” mod ID here at the Fallout 4 Nexus. You didn’t notice? Well, take a look. Okay, moving on. I’m going to save this space for more details later, but for now you can read more here, and I’ll at least say this much: I plan to make Darkmeat more than a mere Dogmeat re-skin. Installation
You know the drill if you installed any manual mods, installation follows the same procedure of dropping mod content into your Fallout 4 data folder. For those new to this concept, here’s a drill down:
1. Find your Fallout 4 install directory
2. Find the “Data” folder in there
3. Drop the “Textures” folder from this mod in there
1. Find your Fallout 4 game info directory, usually located somewhere like “C:\Users\YOUR_USERNAME\Documents\My Games\Fallout4”
5. Open up the “Fallout4.ini” file, and search for the entry “sResourceDataDirsFinal” under [Archive]
6. Add “TEXTURES\” (without quotes of course) to the end of the entry; it should read something like “sResourceDataDirsFinal=STRINGS\, TEXTURES\”
7. Because Fallout 4 likes to change things in your INI files sometimes, go the safe route and make the file read-only (remember to toggle this with
future edits)
8. Enjoy some Darkmeat (almost went with Ninjameat, but meh)
